What does NAAC criterion 5.4 cover?

In the National Assessment and Accreditation Council’s revised accreditation framework, Criterion 5 is Student Support and Progression, and key indicator 5.4 is Alumni Engagement. The commonly cited metric asks whether there is a registered alumni association that contributes significantly to the development of the institution through financial and/or other support services. For some institution types, a related metric has covered the quantum of alumni financial contribution over the assessment period.

The exact metrics, whether they are qualitative or quantitative, and their weightage differ between universities, autonomous colleges and affiliated colleges, and NAAC has announced reforms including binary accreditation and maturity-based levels. Treat this page as a general orientation and always check the current manual for your institution type on the official NAAC website before preparing your self-study report.

What evidence do colleges typically keep for alumni engagement?

Reviewers look for evidence that alumni engagement is organised and sustained, not a one-off. The items below are what institutions commonly prepare. Your IQAC will know which ones the current manual asks for.

    • Registration certificate of the alumni association (as a society, trust or other entity) and its bye-laws
    • Minutes of association meetings and records of office-bearer elections
    • List of alumni events with dates, agenda and attendance
    • Records of alumni contributions: donations, scholarships, equipment, infrastructure
    • Non-financial support: guest lectures, mentoring, placement and internship support, curriculum feedback
    • Alumni feedback collected and how it was acted on
    • Photographs, reports and news of alumni activities

How should an IQAC organise alumni evidence year by year?

Most institutions prepare evidence for an assessment period of several years. Rather than collecting it in a rush, set up a simple annual routine. At the start of each academic year, confirm the alumni association’s office-bearers on the platform. Run every alumni event through the events module so attendance is recorded. Run donation campaigns online so contributions are logged with dates. Ask alumni who give guest lectures or mentor students to be recorded against those activities. At year end, export the year’s records into your IQAC folder alongside the association’s minutes and audited accounts.

Keep personal data proportionate. For accreditation evidence you usually need aggregate counts and lists of activities, not every alumnus’s contact details. Share only what is necessary, consistent with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

What alumni activities strengthen engagement most?

Accreditation aside, the activities that tend to create genuine, sustained engagement are also the ones that produce the best evidence: structured mentoring of current students, alumni-sourced internships and placements, guest lectures linked to the curriculum, an annual reunion with a clear purpose, and specific fundraising campaigns such as named scholarships. Feedback from alumni on curriculum and employability, collected through a survey and acted on, is valuable in its own right.

What does NIRF ask about alumni?

NIRF rankings use parameters such as graduation outcomes, which consider placement and higher-studies data, and a perception parameter. Alumni profiles that record current employment and further education help institutions keep this information current. Methodologies change each cycle, so check the latest NIRF documentation on the official site.
